Food Waste

Keeping Food Waste Out Of Landfills

Disposing of food and organic waste in landfills not only wastes valuable nutrients and takes up precious landfill space but also creates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. We work alongside restaurants to help keep food waste out of landfills, and increase our animals diets with healthy nutritious foods.

What We Do

We’ve teamed up with several restaurants to work on keeping food waste out of landfills. We have scheduled pick up times were we pick up full pails of compostable scraps, and drop off empty clean pails. The pails are provided by Ledwich Family Farm and are lidded to follow food safe practices. If you are a restaurant looking to team up, we have all the food safe practices that you need to follow restaurant standards and should reach out in the form below! These compostable scraps are then fed to our animals, mostly the pigs. Pigs need a balanced diet of fresh foods, along with grain. A whole grain diet is very high in protein and fats which can lead to unhealthy weight gain. We have lots of other animals that benefit from these scraps. Any scraps that are unusable will be composted, putting nutrients back in the soil.

Compost

Any food that we can’t feed to the animals we compost. Part of the permaculture community garden project is building a large scale compost system that can help bring nutrients back into the soil. When we waste food in landfills we create a build up of harmful gasses, such as methane. Think of it as putting your leftover lunch in a ziploc bag and sealing it shut. The food will rot, but it isn’t doing anything beneficial. When we compost we are helping our natural ecosystem, feeding microorganisms that we need to survive, putting nutrients back in the soil and so much more.
