Vegan Animal Sanctuary

Our mission is to rescue and provide lifelong care to animals in need, and to advocate for those who did not have a chance to be rescued.

Meet the Animals

Bobby

Moved in Mother’s Day 2019. Age is unknown. Bobby is Lukie’s son. We don’t know much of his past, but from a vet visit we discovered Bobby is a different breed of goat than his Dad. Bobby is a bit of a bully with his father, and thinks he deserves all the treats. He isn’t very affectionate with people, but would love to show you his jumping skills.

Lukie

Moved in Mother’s Day 2019. Age is unknown. At some point in Lukie’s life he was a pet. He is extremely affectionate and will want to snuggle up real close to your legs. Be careful, he will step in front of you while walking for cuddles! He also enjoys car rides, and sitting on top of cars.

09.17.2019-LedwichFamilyFarmbyLFP-33.jpg

Buster

Moved in Mother’s Day 2019. Age is unknown. Buster’s history to us is very short. He was neglected at his initial home, and used for rides for children. Because of his neglect his hooves were extremely curved. Thanks to our farrier his hooves have been given new life! Buster loves snuggles, children and apples. He’s also got his best friend Gunner to protect him.

09.17.2019-LedwichFamilyFarmbyLFP-34.jpg

Gunner

Moved in Mother’s Day 2019. Age 10, birthday unknown. Gunner was abused by two separate owners before injuring his shoulder. Due to his injury he was rescued and then moved to our farm. Gunner has a hard time trusting humans. His best friend is Buster, and you will always find the two together.

Blue

Moved in August 2019. Blue is two years old. Blue was owned by a very loving family, but some unfortunate situations happened and he is now in our care. The family still checks in on him regularly, and he is very loved by all. Blue has taken a liking to our oldest son, but also anyone in general who will give him pats!

Bug

Bug used to be Starson’s best friend. They were inseparable in the herd. Unfortunately when we had chosen Starson to live with us, Bug had moved to a new home. Then we got the chance to reunite them, and we had to say yes! It was a beautiful reunion and they knew each other instantly. Bug also lived with Diesel, and they’re very happy to be living together again. Moved in October 2020.

Starson

Moved in August 2019. Starson has a vibrant history, both his parents were wild mustangs in Alberta. His mother was caught, and unknowingly pregnant. Starson was born during a very cold winter, and wasn’t discovered right away. Due to this he experienced frost bite on his ears which is why they look clipped. Starson is a very dominant horse, and will lead the herd to where he wants to go.

Kelsey

This special rooster needed a home, so we gave him one! He is an absolute gem in our coop, and will talk your ear off when you visit him. He loves people and is willing to be handled gently, and he likes to walk over people’s feet.

Poppy

Poppy was surrendered as a duckling to the sanctuary after reaching out to people selling them. Poppy now gets to live her life out without the expectation of breeding, or anything from us.

Buster

Buster is a sweet high energy dog. We weren’t going to take on any more animals but his story pulled on our heart strings. His human daddy had passed away, and he was already a rescue living in his second home in a few short years. He had previously been chained up and the human mom didn’t want him to go somewhere like that again. He now has lots of room to run chain free!

09.17.2019-LedwichFamilyFarmbyLFP-104.jpg

Hulk

Moved in January 2017. Hulk was born in November of 2016 into a rescue, HIARC. He is a beautiful dog, part mastiff, rottweiler, shepherd, and lab. He is a giant breed dog, with the mind of a small dog. Don’t be fooled by his large demeanor, he is a scaredy-cat that hangs out with Mom & Dad during thunderstorms.

Kitten

Moved in October 2017. Kitten was adopted from the Winnipeg Humane Society. Initially his name was Cheddar, and then switched to Charlie. Alas Charlie and Harley got confused, so Kitten stuck. Kitten loved his buddy Loki. Life is a little different without the pair together, but he is still a loving kitty and will come to say hi and see if you brought him some treats.

Kelsey Jr & Magaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher, Piggy & Mylkshake were the lucky leghorn hens that survived a tragic incident on the farm due to a bear. These hens were part of a rescue done by The Good Place Sanctuary & Rescue. They were being culled by egg farmers, which is a practice to get rid of hens when they are no longer at their producing peak.

Kelsey Jr is a result of an accidental egg hatch on the farm. We try to avoid letting the hens lay eggs, and remove them regularly from the coop. Sometimes we miss some, and he is a result of that. We love him just the same!

Muscovy Ducks

These ducks have been with us for the entirety of our sanctuary. They moved in on Mother’s Day of 2019. They’ve survived a lot, from predators to strange dogs showing up. Their perseverance is admired greatly. They’re a joy to have around and love splashing in water.

Spike

Moved in September 2016. Age is unknown. Spike was originally supposed to be a foster, but the owner never returned for him. He had lived in an apartment his entire life, and loves the farm life now. You can find him running around, climbing in trees, and exploring the property.

Russell

A loving family rescued Russel the pig. Unfortunately they decided to achieve another one of their life goals and move out of country. Russel is named after vegan activist Regan Russel who was killed by a semi-truck driver during a peaceful vigil.

Russel is brother to his sister pig Regan, which wasn’t intentional but a happy surprise.

Moved in June 2020.

Regan

Regan is a sweet heart of a pig. She loves her brother Russel, and raspberries.

Moved in June 2020.

Guinea Fowl

Our guineas moved in October 2019. They were brought to us as keets, and grew over the winter indoors. They love to wander the yard together and eat bugs. As well as make their silly noises. Unfortunately we have had issues with predators since our property is so isolated. We currently are home to one guinea who lives with all the birds. We like to call him/her Guinea.

Parra & Garcia

These ducks lived with chickens but their coop was destroyed. The owners cared about them very much but wanted them to go to a home with more duck experience. Their names are sponsored after a Red Sox player!

Daisy

Violet and Daisy moved in together in August 2020, they came all the way from British Columbia! It was a very long drive. They share the same story. Born only a week apart, both as twins (free martins) they weren’t valuable for a dairy farmer. But they thought the neighbouring kids would like to take their hand at bottle feeding and raising them to eventually sell for meat. This of course wasn’t how it panned out.

Violet

The two girls fell in love, head over heels, with these ladies. They’re genuine loving and caring nature, both so calm and love human interaction, meant that their planned end couldn’t happen. Luckily they found us, and we keep in touch nearly everyday on their adjustment. The girls are currently building their own sanctuary for special needs chickens. We’re so lucky that these ladies found their way here to live their forever life here.

Jewel

Jewel was surrendered in honour of Thanksliving, along with Blue. Turkeys are social creatures and they should never be alone. She is a feisty birdie, and will let you know if she wants you close or not.

Needs a Name

This little nugget was accidently born in our chicken coop. Sexing bunnies is rather hard, and Torrence thought we had two females together, but she was wrong. The male and female parents have been separated and now the little buns stay with their mom.

Needs a Name

This is Momma Bun. These bunnies originally came back in Mother’s Day of 2019. The original owner had issues with the goats breaking the bunny pens and then the genders intermingled. Well, Bobby did the same thing when he was here and we’ve been playing how to contain bunnies ever since. We have been able to keep these bunnies safe for a good amount of time, and are happy to welcome them officially into the farmily.

Elfie

Elfie was rescued from slaughter along with Big to a loving person, who unfortunately moved away for school and the living situation for the two fell apart. Elfie is a mix of yorkshire and landrace and weighs approximately 600 lbs. She is a very silly girl, often getting out of the pig pen to find us. Only she will get out somehow, while everyone else (including Big) stays in their space. She loves to stick her nose on bums to let you know she’s excited for food. She’s extremely curious and is often right at the gate when it’s time for visits.

Boots & Snoop Piggy Pig

These two are from a set of five brothers that came here at five months old, and moved in March 28, 2021. Due to by-law restrictions their owner could not keep them. They get to join our little family! Their adventure started when two sneaky piglets got away out into the field. It took time and lots of chasing to get their silly bums safely with their brothers.

Lady Rex

It was by accident that some eggs hatched after an unfortunate bear attack on our coop, and this little lady was born. She resembles her father Rex so much. We miss him, but are happy to know his existence lives on in Lady Rex.

Pecan

Pecan is an extremely traumatized 12 year old Shetland pony. She moved to the farm January 2021. She was abandoned during a home sale, and the new owners were not prepared to take her on. They attempted to reach out to the previous owners with no luck. She has trust issues with humans. When we had taken her home her hooves were extremely outgrown, and her mane was covered in burrs. She loves her friend Maple that she lived with. She’s learning to trust us more and more each day.

Maple

Maple is a 9 year old Shetland pony gelding. He lived with Pecan but his demeanour is very different. Maple loves affection, and will accept all your attention. His hooves were also in similar shape, but thanks to our amazing farrier we were able to get them to a manageable length for them to roam.

Boss Piggy

Boss Piggy is one of the five piglet brothers who moved here at five months old. He has beautiful markings on him! It’s very easy to tell him apart from his brothers. He is aptly named as he adores bossing them around.

Big

Big was rescued from slaughter along with Elfie to a loving person, who unfortunately moved away for school and the living situation for the two fell apart. Big is a mix of yorkshire and landrace and weighs approximately 600 lbs. He loves belly rubs, and kisses. He is a sweet gentle giant. He’s a spoiled boy, and a huge people person. He loves his new piggy family on the farm.

Blue

Blue was surrendered in the name of Thanksliving 2021. We would rather put a turkey in a home, than on a table. Blue is a lovely boy who will gobble his heart and soul to you. He loves to ruffle his feathers, and show you he is a good good boy.

Piggy Smalls

Piggy Smalls is the runt of the five pot bellied brothers. He has had a bit of a challenging life so far, living in our home over the 2021/2022 winter. We believe it was failure to thrive, but we have nursed him back to health and he has returned to living with his piggy family again.

Hobo

Hobo was a stray cat for an unknown amount of time, but his entire life before he came here. We estimate he could be around nine years old, but we aren’t sure. Hobo was fed by a lovely old lady, who adored him. We totally understand why, he is such a loveable friendly cat! But with winter approaching her family was worried that she could hurt herself when feeding Hobo so they asked if we would take on his care. Hobo has some eye issues that stem from him being a stray, but our vet says they are not a bother to him and he still has some vision. Hobo’s story is definitely one with a happily ever after.

EV

EV was given to us by a family member as a puppy. She really wasn’t considered a rescue, but after some vet visits we learned something interesting. EV went in due to the fact her puppy teeth never fell out and she had two rows of teeth. The vet she saw said that even though EV didn’t come from a horrible stereotypical puppy mill, if a breeder fails to breed the best genetics they are still considered puppy mills. So EV may not be a beautiful rescue story, but she is a lesson that more care and restrictions should be taken when people breed dogs to sell. Everyone who meets EV loves her, she may bark very loudly at you but she’ll roll over and let you give her belly rubs when you get close.

Mr. Pig

Good sir Mr. Pig is the largest of the five piglets that arrived on our farm at only five months old. He very clearly loves food. He has grown larger than Regan and Russell who are older than him!

Juno

Juno is a senior dog, that has a very unfortunate story and we hate telling these. She was gifted as a Christmas gift to a child, without the parents permission. They still did their best for the dog, but the child was too young to care for the animal. The parent was not ready for this commitment either. Juno’s human mom met Grandpa Ledwich, and began spending a lot of time with him. Juno often spent overnights, and soon learned that Grandpa Ledwichs was more home to her and her human mom also stayed there often too. Then one day, Grandpa Ledwich was at work, and Juno’s human mom passed away there with her. Juno is now living out her retirement dreams on the sanctuary.

Tigger

Tigger was born at Grandpa Ledwichs house! His mom got out when she was a kitten, and became pregnant unbeknownst to everyone. She only had one kitten in her litter, and that is Tigger. He is the king of cats, and has only known the luxuries that having your mom around and the same home can bring. Due to Grandpa Ledwichs health, he has moved to the farm. Though it’s a big change for him, he’s happy to have familiar faces around that he has known for most of his life.

Karma

Karma is a lovely cat that had the worst happen to her. Her first owner de-clawed her (which is like cutting off your fingertips so don’t do it to cats!)! Her owner just didn’t seem to like her very much, and often mistreated her while treating their other cats with high regard. This has made Karma very skittish and untrusting of people. She does love her new home, and has an affinity with children. But her previous owner abandoned her at Grandpa Ledwichs home, and due to his health we have taken on her charge.

Jose

Jose came to us February 2023. He is roughly a year old, along with his feather brothers Joe Dirt + Billy Rae. Their owners were in a situation where they had to move, and couldn’t take them with them.

Vada

Vada is mom to Tigger, and came here along with several other cats and dogs. She was originally Chris’s cat back from 2007, but stayed at Grandpa Ledwichs house since that was her home, and was also partially Grandpa Ledwichs cat. She now lives on the farm since Grandpa Ledwichs health can no longer allow him to take care of pets.

Joe Dirt + Billy Rae

Their namesakes fall after these two fabulous hairstyles. Joe + Billy came here in February 2023 along with Jose. Their owners were in a situation where they had to move, and couldn’t take them with them.
